Shefali Juneja named as chairperson of UN’s Air Transport Committee

  • Dr Shefali Juneja was named the chairperson of the Air Transport Committee (ATC) of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, becoming the first Indian in 28 years to do so.
About Dr Shefali Juneja
  • Dr Shefali Juneja, a 1992 batch officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre) was serving as India’s Representative in the council of the ICAO, Montreal, Canada, for a period of 3 years.
  • In 2019, she replaced senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Alok Shekhar, who was appointed for the post in 2015.
  • She served as the Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation before joining the ICAO.
International Civil Aviation Organisation
  • ICAO is a United Nations (UN) specialized agency, established in 1944, which laid the foundation for the standards and procedures for peaceful global air navigation.
  • The Convention on International Civil Aviation was signed on 7th December 1944 in Chicago.
  • It established the core principles permitting international transport by air, and also led to the creation of the ICAO.
  • Its one of the objectives is to foster the planning and development of international air transport so as to ensure the safe and orderly growth of international civil aviation throughout the world.
  • India is among its 193 members.
  • It is headquartered in Montreal, Canada.
