World’s first intranasal COVID19 vaccine, iNNCOVACC

In News
  • Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya and Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh launched India's first made nasal vaccine against Covid-19 iNCOVACC.
About iNCOVACC
  • The vaccine has been made by Bharat Biotech.
  • Bharat Biotech had announced that it would sell the intranasal vaccine for ₹325 per shot for procurement by the government and ₹800 per shot for private vaccination centres.
  • iNCOVACC is a recombinant replication-deficient adenovirus vectored vaccine with a pre-fusion-stabilized SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.
  • An adenovirus vectored vaccine means that a modified version of an adenovirus has been used which can enter human cells but not replicate inside.
  • Adenovirus-vectored vaccines are the vaccines in which adenoviruses are used as vectors for delivering a particular antigen into the body of a host, where the cells will read the foreign particle, and create antibodies against it.
  • This vaccine candidate was evaluated in phases I, II and III clinical trials with successful results.
  • iNCOVACC has been specifically formulated to allow intranasal delivery through nasal drops.
  • The vaccine is still not available on CoWin.
  • It is a cost effective covid vaccine which does not require syringes, needles, alcohol wipes, bandage, etc, saving costs related to procurement, distribution, storage, and biomedical waste disposal, that is routinely required for injectable vaccines.
